The finalists for WashingtonExec’s Pinnacle Awards were announced Oct. 13, and we’ll be highlighting some of them until the event takes place virtually Dec. 8.
Next is DOD Government Executive of the Year finalist Holly Joers, who’s program executive officer for the Defense Healthcare Management Systems. Here, she talks learning from failure, proud career moments, career advice and more.
What are you most proud of having been a part of in your current organization?
I am extremely proud to be delivering a single, common federal electronic health record for service members, their families and veterans. As the wife of a retired Air Force officer and daughter of an Army veteran, this mission is extremely personal to me. We are transforming health care and ultimately aimed at enhancing outcomes and improving the patient experience.
What’s one key thing you learned from a failure you had?
Calculated risks not taken . . . we often are afraid to rake risk because we believe that decisions are immutable. Assess the risk and recognize when you can regroup as you learn more information.
Looking back at your career, what are you most proud of?
Growing and developing people. I have been blessed to work on some amazing missions, but throughout it all, my proudest accomplishments are always tied to people — guiding them to success.
What’s your best career advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
Embrace change and constantly look to evolve. I often share the adage, “the only thing constant is change,” and it rings true in my experience. Look internally and strive for continuous improvement!
