Top 15 General Counsels to Watch in 2021: Amentum’s Stuart Young

    Stuart Young, Amentum

In 2019, Stuart Young helped form Amentum as a standalone company after it spun off from AECOM. In 2020, the company acquired DynCorp International. Young said he is proud of the standalone legal department he helped stand up over the last 2 years to integrate team members with a longstanding history.

“Not only do we work as a team; we enjoy each other’s company and share the same goals and values,” Young said. “We spend so much time together — even during the pandemic — that a positive working environment is a crucial element of success.”

    Why Watch

While protecting the company’s interests is important, Young believes it’s more crucial to perform contracts well and demonstrate commitment to Amentum’s customers. He wants to focus on selective use of bid protests and contract appeals so his team’s efforts focus on meeting customer needs.

“Sometimes, there’s little choice except to be involved in litigation, but the more efficiently matters are resolved, the less distraction to all involved,” he said.
