Teresa Smith, the Defense Logistics Agency’s chief data officer and director of strategic data services for DLA Information Operations, has been named WashingtonExec’s Pinnacle Award DOD Government Executive of the Year.
In its second year, the annual Pinnacle Awards luncheon was held Oct. 31 at the Ritz Carlton Tysons Corner. The luncheon drew over 525 GovCon leaders and professionals, and showcased exemplary GovCon leadership in industry and government.
Smith’s government career dates back 33 years. She came to DLA in1986 to work with the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service (now known as DLA Disposition Services). She then moved onto to the Defense General Supply Center, and spent time in the Technical Operations Directorate and the Supply Operations Directorate.

In 2001, Smith was named DLA program manager for the Aviation Investment Strategy initiative. She then served as the IT systems development division chief, and in 2003, was appointed as the dual-deputy director of the Legacy Systems Support directorate and the Information Technology directorate.
In October 2006, Smith became a division chief in supplier operations, and three years later, was promoted as the director of Aviation’s Business Process Support Directorate. She served in that role until December 2016, and then became DLA’s CDO. She deployed to Afghanistan in 2015 and was the deputy commander of the agency’s contingency support team.
Smith has a master’s degree in supply chain management from Strayer University and is Level III certified in life cycle logistics.
