The American Red Cross — National Capital Region hosted its 2016 Salute to Service Gala on Nov. 19 at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner. The event honors and celebrates the service of the men, women and families in the military and community who help prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies.
CNN’s Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr served as the emcee. Special guests included astronaut Buzz Aldrin; Pace Founder and CEO, American Red Cross Chairman of the Board and former U.S. Ambassador to Finland Bonnie McElveen-Hunter; American Red Cross Senior Vice President Koby J. Langley; and National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Francis Collins.
The following three awards were presented at the gala:
- Lifetime of Service — Norman Augustine, retired Lockheed Martin Corp. chairman and CEO
- Tiffany Circle Distinguished Woman Warrior Award – Jaspen Boothe, disabled Army veteran, cancer survivor and author who founded Final Salute Inc.
- Exceptional Service Award Honoree — Michèle Flournoy, Center for a New American Security co-founder and CEO
