The Homeland Security & Defense Business Council‘s 10th Anniversary Symposium and National Conversation on the Future of the DHS Enterprise was held Sept. 18, including officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and industry.

The event featured Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, who gave the keynote address, and panelists focused on the state of the DHS Enterprise from a business management perspective. The challenges and opportunities involved with enterprise transformation efforts, including sharing or consolidating IT, data and financial systems were among the topics discussed.

“For 10 years, the Council has worked to encourage a vital exchange of ideas and perspectives between executives from industry and senior officials in government who support the homeland security mission,” Council President and CEO Marc Pearl said in a statement. “Today’s event is an important dialogue that demonstrates the private sector’s support of the Secretary’s Unity of Effort approach to bringing even greater effectiveness and efficiencies to the homeland security enterprise. This Symposium and National Conversation is evidence of our industry’s collective desire to work together with DHS to be prepared for and meet the many homeland security challenges our nation faces.”

Symposium panelists included Anne K. Altman, General Manager, Federal Government and Industries, IBM Corporation; Thomas P. Michelli, Deputy Assistant Commandant (C4IT) and Deputy Chief Information Officer, U.S. Coast Guard; Stephen Rice, Assistant Administrator and Chief Information Officer, Transportation Security Administration; and Eugene H. Schied, Assistant Commissioner, Office of Administration, U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The panel moderator was Todd Morris, a member of the Council’s Board of Directors and Vice President and Business Area Director, Homeland Security and Law Enforcement, SRA International, Inc.

The Homeland Security & Defense Business Council is a not-for-profit, non-partisan membership organization of senior executives from small, mid-tier and large companies that provide technology, product and service solutions to the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies.
