SySTEMic Solutions, Northern Virginia Community College’s regional STEM outreach program, is partnering with Fairfax County Public Schools to host a STEM Volunteer Night on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Mt. Vernon High School. The event aims to expand relationships with businesses and community partners to work collaboratively through partnerships to support in-school and after-school STEM/STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) programs.
A recent report by the Virginia Department of Education states Mount Vernon area schools have the lowest pass rates anywhere in Fairfax County in all four Standards of Learning categories. For the 2013-2014 school year, at least 5 schools in the Mt. Vernon pyramid were “accredited with warning” by VDOE primarily because of low science & math test scores. The STEM outreach program aims to engage students with activities that emphasize creative thinking and hands-on learning with real world applications this troubling trend can be reversed, but we need your voice, your hands, and your expertise to make our vision a reality.
In addition, school officials will be on hand to share their vision for Fairfax County’s new STEAM Project. The Assistant Superintendent and school board member for this area will be in attendance. RSVP to Scott Settar scsettar@fcps.edu by January 20, 2014.
