Serco Inc. today announced its award win of a new contract to integrate and operate Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) transportation operation centers, manage the Safety Service Patrol, and develop and implement a statewide advanced traffic management system.  The contract has a six-year base period, with three two-year option periods and is valued at $355 million.

“We are pleased to partner with VDOT in developing one of the most advanced, fully integrated traffic management systems in the United States,” said Ed Casey, chairman and chief executive officer, Serco, Inc. “We look forward to supporting VDOT to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and safety of its traffic management operations.”

Under this contract, Serco will support VDOT as it moves from its existing traffic management systems, to a single advanced, real-time, statewide solution that oversees 57,000 miles of roadway.  Serco will also develop and deploy the software solution; manage control room operations at five Transportation Operation Centers (TOCs), install and maintain Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment; manage incident and emergency responses, dispatch Safety Service Patrol and maintenance crews to respond to incidents, among many other tasks.

Serco has provided traffic management services around the world, including active traffic management and intelligent transportation systems in the United Kingdom, and traffic/tunnel controls in Hong Kong. Work is expected to begin during the third quarter of 2013.
