Scott Brezler is this year’s SECAF Awards Co-Chair, SECAF Treasurer and is also Partner at Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP. A practiced certified public accountant since 1991, Brezler is experienced in the areas of financial statement audits and reviews of government contractors, accounting system assessment, and government contract compliance and consulting. He has a Master’s Certificate in government contracting from George Washington University.
WashingtonExec spoke with Brezler about SECAF, how the organization can assist small businesses and what small businesses in return can expect from becoming a SECAF member, how to stay afloat financially in times of economic instability, and more.
WashingtonExec: For people who don’t know SECAF, how would you describe the organization? How have you seen it change since it was first created?
Scott M. Brezler: SECAF is the one organization fully dedicated to the success of small businesses in the government contracting community. I’ve been involved with the organization for the past six years. I’ve seen it go from an organization held together by a few great individuals to an organization with structured committees and group of people and companies working side by side to provide small business with the many necessary elements to succeed in doing business with the Federal Government.

WashingtonExec: How can SECAF assist small businesses in standing out and growing in a competitive marketplace?
Scott M. Brezler: SECAF provides access to a wide range of pertinent government officials involved in the procurement process. In addition, SECAF offers educational events on doing business with the government, as well as an advisory forum so contractors can submit specific questions with solutions provided by a forum of industry experts.
WashingtonExec: How do you recommend small businesses in the government contracting community keep afloat financially in these unstable economic times?
Scott M. Brezler: Stay focused and strategically plan around core customers, capabilities and employees. Keep the budgeting and monitoring process fluid and updated often.
WashingtonExec: What are the criteria for a small government contracting business to become a finalist in Government Contractor Awards?
Scott M. Brezler: We have several award categories with varied criteria. To become a finalist in Contractor of the Year category, companies must demonstrate continual growth above their peer groups, the development of valued core competencies, customers and contracts and an overall commitment and success in building for the future.
WashingtonExec: What can a small business expect when becoming a member of SECAF? What are the benefits of being a member?
Scott M. Brezler: When joining SECAF, contractors will gain instant access to government and prime contractor representatives, industry experts and advisors plus a tremendous network of peers and potential teaming partners.
