Three Northern Virginia non-profits, Homestretch, Inc. (Falls Church, Va.), Transitional Housing BARN, Inc. (Bristow, Va.), and United Community Ministries (Alexandria, Va.), won the Future Fund grants. The Future Fund is the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia’s giving circle for young professionals, and winners will receive up to $20,000 each to support programs working to end homelessness in the region.
“In the two short years since it was established, the Future Fund has grown to over 100 engaged young professionals,” said Community Foundation President Eileen Ellsworth. “Their dedication to making a positive difference among Northern Virginia communities creates opportunities organizations like these winners to gain support in their effort to meet critical community needs.”
The winning nonprofits will be formally recognized at the Future Fund’s Annual Awards Gala on May 3, 2013, to be held at Artisphere. The organizations all work in housing and provide programs to help prepare their clients to secure and maintain permanent housing.
Homestretch, Inc.’s grant will support housing costs of five homeless families for three months. Transitional Housing BARN, Inc.’s grant will support the BARN Family Transition Fund, which provides financial assistance to homeless families placed onto a fast track toward permanent housing, subsidizing costs for essential services as families transition to self-sufficiency, attain economic independence, and maintain stable housing.United Community Ministries,’s grant will support the Journeys Program, which provides transitional housing for families displaced by domestic violence, including supportive services.
“We have selected three amazing and diverse organizations with powerful programs helping those who have exhibited a true desire to reach long-term housing stability for themselves and their families,” said Future Fund Grants Committee co-chair Marcy Johnson, Grant Thornton LLP. “The number, quality and diversity of the applications we received was not only impressive but reassuring that our community is actively working to end homelessness and I’m happy that the Future Fund can help further the efforts.”
