A sixth-grader from the Nysmith School for the Gifted won the National Math Bee held in August, and Leesburg Today has the story.
The article reports that 11-year-old Shaan Bhandarkar, who goes to school in Herndon, Va., won the national competition held at Michigan State University. The bee had two written phases, and Bhandarkar also participated in a regional competition held in April.
His mother is quoted as saying in the article that her son is a “self-motivated child” and Bhandarkar said in the piece he didn’t participate to win: “I was doing it just for fun because I didn’t care what I got. I just wanted to do my best in the competition.”
