The Department of Defense has awarded security technology provider Decision Sciences International with a contract to test systems for detecting explosive devices using muon tomography.

Muons are subatomic particles that come from cosmic rays. They travel through the earth’s atmosphere and deep into the ground.
Muon tomography is a method of scanning for these particles that could be used to find heavy elements, such as those in explosive devices, in vehicles and cargo.
“We’re pleased to have this opportunity to work with the Department of Defense through CTTSO [Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office] to evaluate and test Decision Sciences’ technology,” said Decision Sciences President and CEO, Dr. Stanton D. Sloane.
The contract is worth about $400,000 over eight months.
