Paul Unger’s Three Pieces Of Advice To His Kids: “Careers Tend To Be Driven More By Happenstance Than Career Planning”

WashingtonExec asked the simple question to top area executives:

“If you could give your kids only three pieces of advice, what would they be?”

Today’s critical advice comes from Paul Unger, CEO of Paul Unger NBS Search.

    1.       Careers tend to be driven more by happenstance than career planning. Be open to opportunity, but try to apply some strategic thinking and planning about your career.

    2.       There will always be someone with whom you work who will not treat you well. Try killing them with kindness rather than defensiveness.

    3.       Work smart and hard (and when necessary excessively hard for short periods), but insist on a decent work/life balance. In  the end, you will not look back and think, “I wish I had worked more.”
