New Series: Simple Secrets to Success From Execs Who Know

WashingtonExec reached out to area executives to gain insight and share local “secrets to success” stories. Today’s two-cents is from Steven Shane, Public Service managing director for North America at Accenture.

“There are two principles that are core to my career – transparency and putting the client’s interests first.

Transparency requires a lot of things – dealing with my clients with the utmost integrity as well as being forthright with regards to my intentions.  To truly be transparent, I need to be more than just “direct” or “honest.”  I have to be clear in your own intentions and then convey them in a manner that is genuine.  It is not as easy as it may sound.

The second principle is more about where my intentions need to be grounded – in my client’s interests.  This does not mean I give work away or do things for free.  It means I get aligned with the client’s mission.  It also means I have to sometimes tell the client I cannot get aligned and what options we have to resolve that misalignment.”
