Vivek Kundra is the first Federal Chief Information Officer (CIO). Appointed by President Obama, Kundra’s role as CIO includes having budgetary authority over all information technology projects and E-government initiatives across government agencies. His first order of business was to catch up on the $27 billion over-budget and behind schedule federal IT projects.
The master Federal IT Reformation Plan contains 25 points and the cloud-first policy. The cloud-first policy or “cloud computing,” is a new way of delivering computer resources. It is part of major reforming efforts to achieve efficiency and act as a way of “hitting the reset switch.”
Kundra has previously served as Virginia’s assistant secretary of commerce and trade as well as the assistant secretary of technology for Governor Tim Kaine. Kundra is a graduate from the University of Virginia’s Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership and received a master’s degree in information technology from the University of Maryland.
